Bio
Wing Young Huie has photographically captured the complex cultural realities of American society for 50 years with over 50 projects. His photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries locally, nationally and internationally, but his best-known works, Lake Street USA and the University Avenue Project, were epic public art projects that transformed Minneapolis and Saint Paul thoroughfares into six-mile community galleries, reflecting the everyday lives of thousands of its citizens.
He has received many grants, honors, and awards, including: The StarTribune named him “Artist of the Year” in 2000 and in 2018 he was honored with the McKnight Distinguished Artist Award, the only photographer ever to receive the award in its 27-year history. His sixth and most personal book, “Chinese-ness: The Meanings of Identity and the Nature of Belonging” won a Minnesota Book Award and a Northeastern Minnesota Book Award. In 2020 he was honored with the Award for Excellence by the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication Alumni Society Board. In 2025, Wing was honored with the University of Minnesota inaugural Josephine Lee Asian American Studies Program Community Award.
The Minnesota Historical Society is acquiring 5,000 of Wing’s photographs for their archive.
